John Mulaney Hilariously Broke Down The Whole Field of Dreams Story

Known for his sharp wit, charming demeanor, and sharp humor, John Mulaney has captured the hearts of viewers with his hilarious stand-up specials and hit television shows. Some of them include The Top Part (2009), New in Town (2012), and John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch (2019).

As Mulaney went onstage to present the Best Sound award during the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday, he veered into a humorous segment about Kevin Costner’s 1989 film, Field of Dreams. The comedian, 41, joked (via People):

“For years, movies didn’t have sound, and then they figured it out. Some people say that the silent era was the golden era of film — these people are difficult and insane.”

Without pause, the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse star continued, citing several famous movie scenes, including a frequently quoted line from Madame Web:

“Without sound we wouldn’t have been able to hear such classic lines as ‘You’re going to need a bigger boat’, ‘I’ll have what she’s having,’ and, ‘He was in the Amazon with my mother when she was researching spiders just before she died’.”

Phil Alden Robinson’s Field of Dreams (starring Costner as Ray Kinsella) received three Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture. Towards the end of his speech, Mulaney cracked a joke about the scene in which Ray Kinsella’s daughter choked on a hot dog and one of the ghostly baseball players rushed off the field to save her:

“He comes up and he pats her on the back a couple of times and he’s like, ‘Hot dog, stuck in the throat,’ and then he can’t go back in the game’. Cause I guess there’s a rule in ghost baseball that if you leave the field at any point to become an elderly ghost and do the Heimlich maneuver, you can’t return to the field.”

Well, his comedic approach finds the ideal balance between being clever and silly, which makes him the perfect person to inject some much-needed humor into the Oscar stage.
