Super Mario RPG has been an iconic game for the previous generations. Initially, it was launched in 1996. Featuring one of the most, if not the most, character developed by Nintendo, it was indeed a sensational title. Recently, it was announced that the game was being remade for the Nintendo Switch.

Now, I’m going the extra mile with the game being rebuilt from the ground up with 3D graphics and not one but two soundtracks: the original and a new one composed by Shinomura. A lot of effort had been promised by the development team for the Super Mario RPG remake.

The remake was announced in June 2023 and will be released on November 17. 2023. It is unfortunate to report that the entire game has been leaked online. Not to mention, this occurred almost a week before the game’s actual release.

With many major games like the upcoming GTA game having their in-development footage being leaked online, Super Mario RPG has suffered a far worse fate. This is undoubtedly an act of full-fledged piracy and is beyond unethical.

Taking to the popular social media platform, Twitter (now referred to as X), popular Swtich data miner OatMealDome seemingly broke the news. The Twitter post has barred anyone but the tagged accounts from replying to it. OatMealDome said:

[Super Mario RPG] The game has leaked to the Internet. It runs on the Unity engine (version 2021.3.15f1). Nintendo’s internal codename for the game is “Stella”.

Also, rolling out a PSA for people who didn’t want to be caught off-guard with spoilers, which would be doing rounds on the web after the leak. They advised that spoiler avoidance measures should be undertaken and implemented by fans waiting for the game’s official release.

In a comment to the original post, OatMealDome also acknowledged that while this is a 30-year-old game, some gamers might be playing it for the first time. Also, it is possible that the studio might have added new content to the Super Mario RPG remake.

All of this implies that while it is a remake of a game released almost 3 decades ago, it doesn’t mean that the leaks won’t ruin gamers’ experiences. Especially if they are playing it for the first time, which is more than likely given that the original was released for a different generation of gamers.

Piracy and Emulation had been a problem for Nintendo for a long time. This was naturally frustrating for Nintendo. Nintendo even stopped the Steam launch for the popular Wii emulator Dolphin. Unlike the Anti-piracy solution company, Denuvo offered anti-piracy technology to Switch Developers.

Before Super Mario RPG, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom leaked on the platform. There were also other titles for the console, like Pokémon: Legends of Arceus, Pokémon Let’s Go, and Super Mario Odyssey.

Since the game has been leaked online in its entirety. Several forms of media showcased players playing Super Mario RPG on PC using emulators like Yuzu and Ryujinkx on PC. Nintendo Switch is a console that is way past its prime. Although it still enjoys new releases and sales. The numbers seem to be dropping.

That is because it was released all the way back in 2017. It lacked computational firepower even at the time of its release. At the same time, it is still the go-to choice for handhelds and Nintendo exclusives in the market. Super Mario RPG‘s leak will most certainly affect sales for the game.

It is yet to be seen if Nintendo will be available to win the war against Piracy. So far, it has largely been unsuccessful in doing so. The sales numbers for Switch are dropping consistently due to a variety of reasons. The Switch 2 doesn’t seem to be releasing anytime soon.

It will be interesting to see how Nintendo plans to keep up with the next generation of consoles, which are more favored because of their quality. After all, one of the most iconic video game brands shouldn’t fade into obscurity any time soon.
