With recent films in the Marvel franchise like The Marvels and Madame Web failing at the box office, there seems to be a definite case of superhero fatigue that has set in. Another defining factor for Marvel not finding favor with fans could be the absence of marquee stars like Chris Evans who hung up his boots as Captain America after Avengers: Endgame.
The actor recently weighed in on the current situation and the reasons behind superhero narratives failing to connect with audiences. While he did defend the franchise that gave him superstardom, Evans was also realistic and candid about what could have gone wrong.
Chris Evans Spoke Up On Marvel’s Difficult Phase
The past year hasn’t been the most productive period for Kevin Feige and Marvel. With box office disappointments like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, The Marvels, and now Madame Web, the franchise is currently going through a lean period. In addition, the services of Chris Evans’ Captain America and Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man are being sorely missed.
Evans who recently appeared in the Emerald Comic Con, spoke about superhero fatigue and also gave his opinions on Marvel’s current predicament. While the actor was diplomatic enough not to call out names or single out any one film in particular, he gave his honest take on the reality of creating films in this genre. In a statement that appeared on LaughingPlace.com, Evans said,
“Making superhero films isn’t easy. If it was easy, there’d be a lot more good ones – not trying to throw shade. Some Marvel projects are objectively phenomenal films.”
While Marvel still has a lot of projects lined up through which it can redeem itself in the coming months, the fact remains that the presence of a bonafide franchise talisman like Chris Evans will be definitely missed.
Why Chris Evans Felt That Captain America Was A Huge Risk
Marvel may be going through a difficult phase right now. But there is no denying the fact that the franchise gave Chris Evans a massive gig as Captain America in the MCU. While there have been many memorable roles that the celebrity has done in his career thus far, his stint with Marvel will be remembered for posterity. But Evans was initially very hesitant to commit to a contract with Marvel.
In the book, MCU-The Reign Of Marvel Studios written by Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Robin Edwards, the Snowpiercer actor spoke about the trepidation and uneasiness he felt even as he commenced filming Captain America. While the celebrity was a bonafide fan of his character, the fear of the film becoming a flop rattled him.
“I just signed my death warrrant. My life is over. The biggest thing I was worried about was making s**tty f**king movies. I don’t want to make s**tty movies and be contractually obligated to making garbage.”
Evans’ apprehension could also have stemmed from his earlier unsuccessful Marvel stint in The Fantastic Four in which he played the Human Torch. Fortunately for the MCU star, history did not repeat itself. Captain America went on to become one of the franchise’s most iconic cinematic superheroes.
