Die-hard fans of the Spider-Man universe must have noticed this one similarity between Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield, where both actors came into a relationship with their Marvel co-stars. After Garfield played Spider-Man from 2012-2014 in The Amazing Spider-Man films, the actor turned his professional relationship with Emma Stone into a romantic one.
Similarly, even Tom Holland who appeared as the current version of Spider-Man following his MCU debut in 2016 Captain America: Civil War, entered into a headline-making romantic relationship with his co-star Zendaya, from his standalone Spider-Man movies. But according to reports, Sony producer Amy Pascal had advised both the stars to refrain from falling for their co-stars. But it seems Garfield and Holland both ignored Pascal.
Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland’s Relationship with Co-Stars
Over the years, three different actors have played the role of Marvel’s web-slinger. Starting with Sam Raimi’s iteration where Tobey Maguire took on the role of Spider-Man, the character was later played by Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland. According to Sony and Marvel’s history, Garfield came after Maguire to portray the New York superhero.
Taking on the role of the web-slinger from 2012 to 2014 in The Amazing Spider-Man movies, the actor appeared alongside Emma Stone. However, after Andrew Garfield’s two sequels, the role of Spider-Man went to Tom Holland who made his debut in MCU with Captain America: Civil War in 2016.
Thereafter, in 2017, Holland got his standalone Spider-Man movies alongside Zendaya, which turned into Marvel’s most successful Spider-Man flicks. But while we are discussing the particular character and the actors who played the role, let’s shed some light on how Garfield and Holland both shared a romantic relationship with their respective co-stars.
Garfield and Holland Openly Ignored Amy Pascal’s Advice
According to Gamerant, Andrew Garfield made headlines for being romantically linked with Emma Stone, during the production of The Amazing Spider-Man. Although their real-life chemistry got translated well on camera, the duo was rumored to have broken up, a year after the sequel release, in 2015.
Similarly, even Tom Holland and Zendaya made headlines following the press tour of their first Spider-Man film back in 2017. Although they initially shrugged off the questions, the duo were later spotted being romantic with one another by mid-2021. From public outings to sharing heartwarming captions about one another on Instagram, Holland and Zendaya had become a thing.
However, while Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland followed the same step of being romantically involved with their co-stars, they both were apparently advised against that very thing, by Sony producer Amy Pascal. During an interview with the New York Times, Pascal revealed how she had advised both the Spider-Man stars against any sort of romantic association with their co-stars.
“I took Tom and Zendaya aside, separately when we first cast them and gave them a lecture. Don’t go there — just don’t. Try not to. I gave the same advice to Andrew and Emma… And they all ignored me.”
But it seems despite Amy Pascal’s advice to the Spider-Man stars, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland purposefully ignored her lectures. Despite elaborating on how often romantic relationships between co-stars complicate things, Garfield and Holland followed the common trend of dating their on-screen love interests.
Amy Pascal Reportedly Threw Sandwich at Kevin Feige
Although Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland refused to follow Amy Pascal’s advice, they didn’t let their romantic relationship affect their work. So on that note, let’s take a look at how Pascal once reacted to Kevin Feige’s suggestion for having Peter Parker join the MCU. According to the New York Times interview, the Sony producer noted how she reportedly “threw a sandwich” at Feige after listening to his idea.
The Spider-Man: No Way Home producer began by discussing how she had called Kevin Feige to her office for help after The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Willing to offer his idea, Feige went to Pascal’s office over a lunch discussion. But unfortunately, despite his eagerness to help, when Feige suggested Peter Parker venture into the MCU, Amy Pascal ended up lobbing a sandwich at the Marvel boss.
“I called Kevin and said, ‘Help.’ And then he came over to my office for lunch and said, ‘I know how to help you.’ And then I threw a sandwich at him.” Pascal stated.
“She said ‘I really want you to help on this next movie. We have these great ideas for the next one. It’s amazing stuff’. And I said, ‘I’m not good at that – giving advice and leaving. The only way I know how to help is if we just make the movie for you’.” Feige added.
Understandably Amy Pascal wasn’t quite keen on Kevin Feige’s idea. Therefore, in an attempt to protest against the suggestion, Pascal threw a sandwich at him. However, with the critical downfall of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony had to turn to Marvel for help, and eventually, Feige’s idea went into action.
