A live-action adaptation of the popular Minecraft video game is now in development, and Jason Momoa and Jack Black are set to lead the film. The director of the film, Jared Hess, recently talked about his approach to the material and his intention to please the core fans of the game.

In an interview with the Salt Lake Tribune, Hess talked about avoiding past mistakes of videogame adaptations and specifically pointed out the infamous first design for Sonic the Hedgehog. He claims that he does not want to disappoint young gamers by making an underwhelming film. He said,

“I think anybody that does any IP, they just want to avoid an ugly Sonic situation. I just can’t disappoint the 10-year-olds, or they’re going to murder us.”

The first designs of the Sonic movie received backlash because it looked too real and weird for an animated film. This seems to be one of the learning curves for the makers of Minecraft, and it remains to be seen how Hess’ adaptation fares with other existing game adaptations.
