Why Did Fans Push for a Hunter x Hunter Movie Yoshihiro Togashi Initially Avoided?

The Hunter x Hunter franchise released its first movie in 2013 based on the main plot, named Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge. It was under the direction of Yuzo Sato and scripted by Shoji Yonemura.

Although major parts of the movie are based on the filler events of the story, at the same time it also includes some canon flashbacks of one of the major characters, Kurapika. These events were from the previously released one-shots named Kurapika’s Memories One and Two.

Interestingly, the creator of Hunter x Hunter, Yoshihiro Togashi had originally written this part of the story but ultimately decided not to include it in the main story.

In fact, in an interview, the interviewer asked Togashi about how he felt since this was the first time Hunter x Hunter was being adapted into a movie.

In his response he said,

“It is a very strange feeling. This is something that I left behind, and normally would have wanted to be kept in the past. But so many people had become a part of this, and before I knew it I was participating as well. Some people say such things as “your work/art is like your children”, and I feel like I was able to understand this for the first time. This restless feeling is similar watching your child perform at a recital. Though in my case, my manga is not my child but is a part of me as an individual, so how it is viewed doesn’t bother me. But with the T.V. anime and movie, it is exciting.”

The Hunter x Hunter fans’ passion for the story has inspired the creation of a new movie that, while not part of the main events, offers an exciting expansion of the beloved characters.

However, at the same time, he also mentions that the chapter still has a long way to go before hitting the shelf, as the editor of the Shonen Jump magazine is still trying to figure out the right time and placement to introduce Hunter x Hunter chapter 401.

As of now, we still don’t know what the next chapter is going to be all about. So it is still a bit of a mystery whether the story will simply pick up from where we left off in the last released chapter, or if it might shift the focus to explore different characters and storylines.
