Tobey Maguire Reportedly Wants Spider-Man 4 But Marvel, Sony More Interested in Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland To Lead the Spider-Verse

Tobey Maguire Reportedly Wants Spider-Man 4

The cinematic legacy of Tobey Maguire began when he starred in Spider-Man and made it the most tragically beautiful version of the comic book character on screen. The movie, artistic in its own way, gave us the first live-action Green Goblin, portrayed by the wildly underrated Willem Dafoe, and the two foes quickly became one of the most comic-accurate adaptations to ever exist on film. But the success that followed, along with the reappearance of the stars in No Way Home doesn’t look like enough fodder for Sony to cash in a Spider-Man 4 just yet.

When is Tobey Maguire Coming Back as Spider-Man?

Tobey Maguire brought us a memorable experience as Spider-Man when he first debuted on the big screen as the wall-crawler in 2002. Directed by Sam Raimi, the man known to be associated with the comic book figure ever since created what could be hailed as one of the best recreations of the fan-favorite superhero. The trilogy that followed then delivered some of the most iconic Spider-Man scenes in cinematic history.

However, with the end of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man came the resurrection of the character with Andrew Garfield‘s version. Almost equally loved, if not more so by some Spider-Man factions, the reboot was a remarkable follow-up to the original trilogy and Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man did justice to his predecessor’s legacy when the latter stepped into the spandex suit. Now it seems that the genesis of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe which began with Venom in 2018 has led to some massive reconsideration on Sony’s part.

Tom Holland, the latest and youngest web-slinger who crawled into the mainstream Marvel Cinematic Universe and into our hearts simultaneously finally crushed some big records at the box office when Spider-Man: No Way Home brought the multiversal overlap that we’ve all been waiting for. Sony, keen on scraping off of that success, now looks rightfully interested in moving forward with a Spider-Man sequel; the only catch — it’s not going to be Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 4.

Tobey Maguire Interested in Picking Up Where Sony Left Off

Sony’s first Spider-Man trilogy, even with all its great arcs ended a bit too early for anybody’s liking. And it’s not simply the fandom’s opinion as the lead himself now voices his interest in taking up the mantle once again. Tobey Maguire has claimed that he would definitely be up for a Spider-Man 4 if asked by Sony but unfortunately, the latter’s ongoing partnership with Disney and Marvel Studios has become quite lucrative in the years.

Although reports about troubled negotiations have surfaced many a time, the fandom goes into shock whenever rumors about Tom Holland quitting the MCU hit the grapevine. But, to date, the reports have not come to fruition. Marvel seems to be moving forward with a rumored fourth movie that will follow up on the events of No Way Home and Sony looks interested in an Andrew Garfield-starring The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Whether Tobey Maguire fits into any of those plans remains a subject only of the fandom’s speculation.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now available for streaming on Starz.
