The reveal of Shadow of the Erdtree, the long-awaited DLC for Elden Ring, was the perfect celebration of the critically-acclaimed title’s second birthday. Fans are enormously hyped for the expansion, which features a new map, weapons, bosses, additional lore, and more.

However, questions about the future of the franchise now linger. Will there be more DLC, or maybe even a sequel? Elden Ring‘s director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, was recently questioned about this, and he may have hinted towards future content.

In an interview with IGN, Miyazaki spoke about the future of Elden Ring, where he said, “We don’t want to say this is the end of the Elden Ring saga for now. I think we said a similar thing at the end of Dark Souls 3.

He then added, “We don’t want to discourage the possibilities for that. There might be more ideas in the future. We don’t have any current plans to make a second DLC or a sequel, but we definitely don’t want to snuff out that possibility. We think that there could well be something in the future.

While Miyazaki’s words give the impression that a sequel or additional DLC isn’t happening, the phrase “current plans” does leave a sliver of hope for the future.

This news feels particularly poignant considering Elden Ring‘s meteoric rise; the 2022 Game of The Year has sold over 23 million copies and garnered universal praise for its vast open world, challenging gameplay, and rich lore.

“Current Plans” for Elden Ring Could Change

While Miyazaki may have shot down hopes of more Elden Ring right now, plans could always change

This situation can possibly be interpreted in some ways. First, Miyazaki’s mention of “current plans” could hint at a potential shift in focus after the release of Shadow of the Erdtree. The developer might be dedicating resources to new projects or revisiting older franchises.

This isn’t out of character, as FromSoftware has a history of focusing on creating new narratives while revisiting their beloved creations only after several years.

Secondly, the immense success of Elden Ring could create pressure for an eventual sequel. While Miyazaki isn’t necessarily known for indulging in fan service, the commercial success of Elden Ring might influence future development decisions.

Moreover, decisions like these are now completely in From Software’s hands, since they recently took control of the Elden Ring IP from Bandai Namco.

While there’s no immediate confirmation of Elden Ring content beyond this year, fans shouldn’t abandon all hope. Miyazaki’s comments leave a small window of possibility for the future, and the game’s enduring popularity could ultimately tip the scales toward what fans want.

In the meantime, we still have the immense Shadow of the Erdtree DLC dropping on 21 June to take up all our time and patience.
