James Gunn Responds To Fans’ Queries About Superman: Legacy

The recent announcement of several castings for Superman: Legacy has become the talk of the town. Staple characters such as Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor are certainly expected to appear in the upcoming movie, but the likes of Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, Mr. Terrific, and Angela Spica, among others are also joining the lineup.

While this sounds very exciting for many fans, some were bothered that the movie went from a solo Superman feature to a hundred characters involved. Surely, it won’t have that many people on the roster, as James Gunn said via Instagram:

Or like every other single protagonist of all time with 10 speaking roles announced.”

Another fan asked the Guardians of the Galaxy director if any more cast announcements are happening in the near future, and he said:

Well we’re running out of characters to announce, but there will be a couple more soon.”

Of course, there will be those less significant but essential cast, such as people from Daily Planet, with a fan mentioning Cat Grant or Steve Lombard. In response, Gunn only replied with a yellow smirking face emoji, not to confirm or deny.

Gunn previously addressed a question via Threads about his casting process, where he admitted he also checks the pulse of the crowd but does not necessarily let it influence his decisions:

When I’m casting a role, I will sometimes see who fans have suggested online for folks I or my casting directors haven’t considered. Sometimes they have good ideas, sometimes terrible ones. I don’t remember it actually leading to someone being cast, however.”

The confirmed key cast of Superman: Legacy includes David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. They are also joined by Skyler Gisondo, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Carrigan, Edi Gathegi, Sara Sampaio, and María Gabriela de Faría.

While Superman: Legacy won’t be out until 2025, the long wait is definitely going to be worth it. The amount of time and effort James Gunn and his team are putting into the preparation of the movie is incredibly massive, but knowing how knowledgeable he is when it comes to comic book films, fans can be assured that the upcoming Superman feature will be in good hands.

Gunn’s works on The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy have proven successful. He also has a knack for bringing obscure characters into the spotlight, but for a famous character like Superman, it’s going to be a real challenge. Still, the director promised he would honor the character’s legacy as he knows people from all over the world love Superman.
