Interestingly, Christopher Reeve’s 1978 Superman movie was marketed as Superman: The Movie as seen on its posters. Gunn also acknowledged this in one of his comments.

When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025.”

He also shared that they have commenced filming on the last day of February which luckily coincides with the superhero’s birthday.

Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday.”

Addressing the title change in the comments, James Gunn explained to a fan why he felt the need to rename what was already a perfect title. The director also mentioned that no other Superman films had that label since Christopher Reeve’s 1978 version.

It felt like the right name. And when I brought it up everyone agreed. And there really hasn’t been a movie titled “SUPERMAN” since the 1979 [sic] movie was solely promoted as ‘Superman: The Movie.’

James Gunn discussed his inner connection with Superman in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The project is one of the biggest and most anticipated movies from the revamped DC Universe, so it is only important to make sure that the rapport will translate onto the screen.

I completely relate to Superman because he’s everything I am. He’s somebody who is an outsider who feels like an alien, but also the ultimate insider, because he’s f—king Superman. And that’s kind of like what I feel like.”

The director mused over the question of how he could make the reboot stand out from the crowd. Over the decades, there have been numerous Superman iterations, and some of them have gone into oblivion. Gunn revealed he already knows the answer.

How can I make it different from the Superman movies that have been made so far, but also have it respect all the Superman movies that have been made so far? So it just took me some time to try to figure it out.”

Superman is slated for July 11, 2025 release.
