DCU fans all over the world strongly believe that Henry Cavill is the best thing that has happened to Superman in recent times. He is simply the best one to carry this name. So they were naturally disappointed and heartbroken when the British actor revealed that he would not be playing the iconic comic book character any longer. Fans were hoping for Cavill’s return, especially after his post-credits cameo in 2022’s Black Adam.

But in December 2022, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn revealed that Cavill was never hired to return as Superman in the new regime.

James Gunn’s controversial decisions

The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) underwent some of the biggest changes in 2022. The appointment of director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran as the CEOs of DC Studios was one of them.

These changes substantially led to massive changes in upcoming DC Universe projects. And one of them was the Superman situation. While talking about Cavill’s future in Superman, Gunn tweeted,

“Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over the moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.”

Henry Cavill also shared a social media statement after his meeting with James Gunn and revealed that he would not be returning as Superman.

Furthermore, the Man of Steel actor also extended good wishes to James and Peter and wished them luck for the future and for building a new universe. In the end, he thanked his fans, who have always stood by his side.

It seems that DC bosses are developing the third part of the franchise with Israeli actress Gal Gadot. When the reports about Gadot’s return in Wonder Woman 3 started flooding in, fans questioned Gunn’s decision over Cavill.

One netizen called Cavill the best and tweeted, “Henry Cavill was perfect as Superman”.

While fans won’t see Cavill donning the Superman suit, he has some new big projects lined up. Argylle starring Dua Lipa and Henry Cavill will be released in early 2024 and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, an action spy film will be released sometime next year.
