Helldivers 2‘s much-anticipated arrival of mechs prior to the Cutting Edge Warbonds content update apparently reinvigorated the developers’ bitter memories of the game’s initial launch, as the game’s online infrastructure was yet again overwhelmed.
The liberation of planet Tien Kwan, the key to unlocking the EXO-45 mechanized suits, unleashed a tidal wave of player enthusiasm that Arrowhead Studios simply weren’t prepared for. Arrowhead CEO and Helldivers 2 creative director Johan Pilestedt issued a recent tweet reporting the server issues, saying, “With the successful push from the community to take Tien Kwan and the subsequent enabling of the mechs our servers have a hard time coping, the team is aware and doing what they can to mitigate. This intermittent issue is caused by too many trying to acquire the mech at the same time. Service will be restored eventually, but for now I ask for patience.”
Pilestedt capped off the tweet with a statement applauding the community’s determination and efficiency:
I am so impressed by the combined power and dedication of the Helldivers 2 community. You all are massive heroes liberating Tien Kwan 4x faster than we thought.
This rapid success, fueled by an insatiable need for hulking mechs, resulted in a server overload as players raced to claim their EXO-45s. The irony is hard to miss, as Helldivers 2‘s servers, which had recently achieved a semblance of stability after nearly 3 weeks of capacity issues, were brought to their knees again right after the game’s first content addition.
It Was All Worth It For The Mechs
The situation is frustrating yet amusing. Hundreds of thousands of Helldivers 2 players had to face server issues and excessively long login times for weeks after the game launched, and right after they liberated Tien Kwan, the servers gave up just as they were awarded their mechanized spoils of war.
There’s no denying the passion of the community, though. The rapid liberation of Tien Kwan wasn’t just about completing a map, it was a targeted mission – a locked-in pursuit of the coveted EXO-45s. The sheer volume of players converging on the servers to acquire these new weapons speaks volumes about their strategic potential.
