But the developers did not mind this unexpected yet pleasant surprise. They got to fixing it and making sure that the fans got to play this game to the fullest. The server limitation issue was solved as swiftly as it appeared. And now, thanks to all the effort this passionate group of people has put in, this game has crossed yet another milestone.

The year 2024 started in the shadow of 2023; the previous year was full of mind-blowing titles that set sales records. From incredible comebacks such as Cyberpunk 2077 to unexpected successes such as Baldur’s Gate 3, all kinds of releases happened in 2023. No one thought any game in 2024 would match that.

Helldivers 2 launched, and it instantly surpassed God of War on Steam as the most-played Sony title at launch. This makes sense, though, as God of War 2018 was a very old offline game, while Helldivers 2 is a very new online co-op game that requires players to stay connected.

Yet, its success came as a pleasant surprise. Its impact is such that gamers on every shore are either playing this game or they are asking Sony and Arrowhead Game Studios to bring it to their respective platforms. They have even started a petition for this, which is getting more signatures with every passing minute.

Now, more than a month after its launch, Helldivers 2 has completed yet another feat. This game has gone and surpassed the likes of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in sales. In January 2024, Modern Warfare 3 was the top-selling game. To reach that spot, it had surpassed the likes of Tekken 8 and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

But a recent report suggests that this changed in the month of February. The incredibly popular shooter Helldivers 2 was able to defeat the mammoth IP such as Call of Duty in the war of sales. It was not the only game to do so; the other game that did this was Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth. This means that Modern Warfare 3 was effectively the third-best-selling game of February 2024.

It happens very rarely when a game that comes from an AA studio surpasses games like Call of Duty and Final Fantasy in sales. But the game that Helldivers 2 has become, after a month of its launch, does not come as much of a surprise.

What remains to be seen is if this game will be able to maintain this momentum in the month of March too. The issue with an exclusive game is that they run out of buyers eventually, as every platform has a limited number of owners.
