The latest Helldivers 2 Major Order, which required players to eliminate a colossal two billion enemy Automatons, has predictably failed. The community fell short of reaching the target by about 700,000 kills. This setback, however, has resulted in a surprising lore twist within the game.
In a tongue-in-cheek announcement on the game’s Discord server, community manager Baskinator revealed that the seemingly huge battles players have fought in so far were merely a prelude, as the Second Galactic War has now commenced. However, some players think that the new Major Order could be hinting to an impending Xbox launch for the co-op shooter.
Helldivers 2‘s First Galactic War Apparently Has A Sequel
The previous conflicts of the First Galactic War have been retconned as a massive “special operation,” but the Major Order brings way more than that. It tasks players with protecting the construction of massive SEAF training facilities on specific planets, where “new recruits are being trained.”
Many in the Helldivers 2 community have been speculating over the purpose of these training facilities. One theory posits that they might be used to train NPC squad mates, a feature not currently present in the game. This would be a significant addition, potentially altering squad composition and combat strategies.
Could The Training Facilities Be For Xbox Players?
However, another tantalizing notion suggests the potential of it being a testing ground for an entirely new platform. Some fans believe the “trainees” in the facilities might be referring to Xbox players, with developer Arrowhead gearing up to launch the game on Xbox Series X/S consoles in the near future.
Ever since Helldivers 2 popped off earlier in the year, Xbox fans have been clamoring to play the game on their console of choice, to the point where they even began a petition requesting Sony to port the game to Xbox consoles. The petition received over 100,000 signatures, with the possibility of Helldivers 2 on Xbox no less murky.
So, while this idea of the latest Major Order alluding to Xbox players is exciting, it’s almost certainly wishful optimism. Helldivers is a PlayStation IP, and with the game selling over 12 million units since launch and being the fastest-selling first-party release for the company, there’s almost zero precedent for the game to come to Xbox.
A more likely theory suggests the training facilities might be related to internal testing environments mentioned by the developers in the past. The “new recruits” in this case could be test subjects, with the training facilities serving as a controlled space to experiment with new features before wider implementation.
Regardless of the specific purpose, though, the Second Galactic War was an unforeseen twist that references real-world events in Helldivers 2‘s typical meta humor, and it’ll be exciting to see which direction Arrowhead takes it in.
