Sam Raimi, the legendary brains behind the original Spider-Man film series from the 2000s, is hoping yet again to return to work with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This comes after a statement from the mastermind himself addressing the rumors of him being the top choice to helm the upcoming highly anticipated MCU movie, Avengers: Secret Wars.
But while he has expressed his fondness of working with the multi-billionaire franchise and shared his hope of becoming part of a major project like Avengers 6, one of his past films comes into focus, i.e. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Which, inevitably, isn’t the finest one in his collection, and may prove to be a barrier to his dream coming true.
Sam Raimi Hoping to Get a Call for Avengers: Secret Wars
For quite some time now, rumors have been spinning around about Raimi being reportedly eyed as the top choice by Marvel for helming the sixth film in the Avengers film series. While previously, little to no solid update was received on this matter, times seem to have changed, considering how the director himself has finally addressed those rumors.
This happened at this year’s WonderCon event, where the genius filmmaker was one of the attendees amidst the buzz surrounding his soon-to-be-released film Boy Kills World. As shared by ScreenGeek, not only did the Oz: The Great and Powerful director address those rumors, but he shared his hopes for the same as well.
Here’s what he said:
“I love 90% of the Marvel heroes that I’ve read in the great Stan Lee Marvel Universe comic books. I would love to work with Marvel again. They haven’t reasonably asked me to. I hope they had a good experience with me. They haven’t asked me yet. I hope they do.”
So, that’s that. Although Marvel is yet to reveal if they intend to bring him on board, Sam Raimi has expressed his wish to work with them nonetheless. But there’s one more thing: What do fans think of this news? Are they happy hoping their favorite Spider-Man helmer would return? Or are they expecting to receive another film like Doctor Strange 2 if Raimi is brought on board?
Well, to be honest, this issue is bringing about a lot of mixed reviews from fans, and all of the tremendous criticism surrounding Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is inevitably one of the reasons why.
A Section of Fans Share Their Mixed Opinions on This News
Although it is with sheer pride that we say that Sam Raimi was indeed the mastermind behind Tobey Maguire‘s earth-shattering Spider-Man saga, having him in the director’s seat for a project as reportedly massive as Avengers 6 doesn’t sound like that good of an idea to quite a few fans. Especially after the considerable criticism that was received over Doctor Strange 2.
While quite a few fans are still backing Raimi up for this, a section of fans still seem to have this question: If offered the director’s seat for the respective movie, could the mastermind director do justice to a massive project like that, after the considerable disaster that was Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness? Well, here’s what some of the brutal-est reviews are saying:
Multiverse of madness was hot ass so no, you’re out

He made Multiverse of Madness a snooze fest. Hard pass

Been a Sam Raimi fan for decades, but please no. After that terrible Doctor Strange 2 film, I’d rather these films get cancelled all together.

Definitely Doctor Strange 2
That didn't feel like a Sam Raimi movie at all.

On the other hand, some other fans are sharing their own perspectives on why Sam Raimi in the director’s chair for Avengers 6 wouldn’t be the best idea after all. This includes them citing that Raimi might not get enough creative control over the film and end up giving a similar project like the Doctor Strange sequel, or that he might not be able to give his best performance in a major project like this.
Part of the reason why Doctor Strange 2 failed is that Sam Raimi absolutely wasn’t the right choice for the film. I came to this conclusion after watching the film. He either can’t create serious environment or he overdo that. Doctor Strange 2 needed its first creators.

I cant see Sam Raimi doing a big movie like this. He wont have full creative control like he did in his Spider-Man movies (not so much 3). Doctor Strange 2 was great but im sure there were some things that was out of his control. And now these 2 big Avengers movies?? No way https://t.co/5zYnsxR0PO

I said this about Doctor Strange 2, and I'll say it again now that rumors of Sam Raimi directing one or both of the Avengers movies is circulating. He's an amazing director, and I love his films. But he's not the right director for a Marvel film. Especially not an Avengers film.

I like Sam Raimi but it would honestly be kind of a bizarre decision to let him direct it, he would definitely make it ton more better if he gets full control of it unlike Doctor Strange 2, but I don’t know he might not be the right Director to direct such a huge film https://t.co/BAuSMUKMXe

While these reviews are truly worth considering, what needs to be remembered is that Raimi could have done a better job with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had he gotten more creative freedom. And assuming he does get that freedom in Avengers 6 (if cast for directing), then there is still a massive chance of him bringing a total masterpiece to the table.
Regardless, for now, we’ll just have to wait for the studios to cook up their final decision on this matter and see how this series of events eventually turns out to be.
