Gege Akutami has created a vast selection of characters, each with their own type of cursed technique. From Gojo’s Unlimited Void and Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine to Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration, some truly dangerous powers have been introduced in Jujutsu Kaisen.
However, only one character in the series, Master Tengen, was immortal at the cost of a vessel. A Jujutsu Kaisen theory suggests that there’s one more character who could achieve immortality if he wanted to.
Can Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration Surpass Mortality?
Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration is his innate ability that allows him to distort the shape of souls, which reflects on his body. Mahito can touch his own soul as well as that of others to reshape it. Depending on the shape of the distorted soul, the body transfigures as well.
Mahito can also reform the shape of his own soul to heal any injuries that he sustained in battle. Thus, physical attacks aren’t very effective, and the only way to kill him is by injuring or attacking his soul. Mahito has also shown that he can shift shapes to avoid attacks by shrinking or transfiguring into an animal.
In fact, the user can also change the age of the physical body by manipulating the soul or even becoming a different gender or species. Thus, a fan theory suggests that if Mahito could manipulate the soul to such an extent, he could keep his body constantly at its prime without ageing. This suggests that immortality might be achievable for Mahito.
Mahito is also capable of curing diseases and surpassing heavenly restrictions, as seen with Kokichi Muta. If he can cure diseases and shape-shift into anything, there is a possibility that Idle Transfiguration can also make him immortal.
Why it was Unlikely for Mahito to Achieve Immortality in Jujutsu Kaisen
Mahito can heal his own injuries but has never shown any obsession with immortality. Is he sadistic and immature to his very core? Yes. Does he want to reign as an immortal being? Not quite. In fact, as long as cursed spirits take over the world, he doesn’t care if he is present to see it.
From a logical perspective, Mahito can be easily hurt by long-range attacks such as that of Nobara. Any damage to his soul is also dangerous since injuries on one’s soul are more permanent than physical ones.
Of course, it might be easy for Mahito to achieve biological immortality by healing himself over and over again and by not ageing. But actual immortality is harder to achieve since that would mean Mahito has to be undefeatable, or his injuries need to heal automatically. Even Tengen wasn’t a true immortal in Jujutsu Kaisen since he needed a Star Plasme Vessel to replace his host body.
