In the history of the entertainment industry, there have been several epic tales told across several genres, many of whom have become legends. One of these could have been HBO’s live-action adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones books. Once a huge phenomenon among the cinephile community, the show received an incredibly disastrous ending with its eighth and last season.
And now the series has turned irrelevant, only to be remembered by how one of the biggest TV shows became one of the biggest disappointments in the entire history of the entertainment industry. And now fans reckon that its disappointing last season was not what made it irrelevant but was part of the bigger problem.
Reason Why Game of Thrones Became Irrelevant
Based on the popular fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin, HBO’s live-action Game of Thrones adaptation used to be one of the biggest phenomena in the entertainment industry, From the characters to the crew, there were several things that fans enjoyed about the series.
Yet starting from season three or four, several fans reckon that things had already started spiraling down. From bad character arcs to undervalued characters, several issues started the downfall of Game of Thrones. And as subsequent seasons were released, many of the plot details and character goals did not align with the source material.
Furthermore, there were countless controversial plot decisions taken early on that made fans aversive of the once phenomenal series. From Tyrion’s escape from prison to how Stannis Baratheon was treated from the start, these problematic decisions aided the eventual descent of the series. The excessive use of nudity and s*xual scenes to allegedly further the plot made fans even more angry over the series.
And Season 8, Game of Thrones’ epic failure of a concluding season was just the cherry on top that made fans convinced that the show’s downfall was a long time coming.
Fans Hail Game of Thrones Season 8 as Part of the Problem
Game of Thrones concluded in 2019 when it should have gone on for a couple of seasons more if the makers wanted to remain true to the source material. But as is the norm within the entertainment industry, the storyline was rushed leading to a bewildering and incomprehensible narrative.
Yet, it wasn’t season 8 that made Game of Thrones irrelevant, for as is evident from above, the series was already fast moving towards its inevitable end the moment it started deviating from the source material.
It wasn’t just one bad season, and they weren’t just bad, they completely unraveled the story. Someone counted all the abandoned plot points, it’s over 100!

The decline was noticeable starting in S5. The Bronn/Jaime Dorne plot, the complete butchering of Stannis’ character…there was a noticeable drop in quality after S4 (which, in my opinion, remains the best season of TV I’ve ever seen).

Starting going downhill in season 3 and never stopped.

It was more like a bad season, followed by a worse season, followed by an even worse season and then nothing for 2 years then the worst season ever followed by the worst finale ever written.

It stunk the second it didn't have the books to pull from (after season 4).

Respectfully, it wasn't one bad season but a few.
The final season just made it undeniable for people who hadn't yet realized.— The Chivalry Guild (@ChivalryGuild) April 15, 2024
And so while fans cannot still get over how bad the Game of Thrones ending was, there is no denying that the downfall of the show will forever be remembered by the entertainment industry as a cautionary tale of how not to adapt a popular book series.
Game of Thrones can be streamed on HBO Max.
