Kathryn Newton is slowly becoming one of the current generation’s scream queens as she has been dabbling in more horror films in recent years. Films like like Freaky, and Lisa Frankenstein have shown that she can easily slip into the horror/ comedy space with such ease and confidence. Newton recently had a new release Abigail, which was also a horror comedy.

However, many people recognize her from her MCU role as Cassie Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Working in a big CGI-heavy Marvel film and a relatively grounded horror-comedy like Abigail was a huge shift for Newton. Her recent statement about Ant-Man 3 being her easiest job has been misconstrued by fans and the actress is getting some undeserved backlash online.

Last year, Kathryn Newton made her MCU debut as Cassie Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The film and the character were much anticipated before its release but received negative reviews from fans due to its underwhelming nature. Despite the committed performances of the cast including Jonathan Majors as Kang, the film turned out to be a box-office disappointment.

Newton recently promoted her new horror comedy film Abigail and was interviewed by Cinepop. She was asked about the more challenging film between Abigail and Ant-Man 3. Unlike most actors who find working under the green screen challenging, Newton revealed that working on Ant-Man 3 was the easiest in her career.

The actress found Abigail more physically challenging but more freeing as there were real props, people, and no green screen. She said,

“I think the Marvel movie, actually. But I don’t know… This was, physically, actually harder than Ant-Man. Ant-Man was the easiest job of my life. It was really fun… And this one was just as fun, but it was different. We had a real set, we had real props, real people. So whatever inspiration you get is from what’s happening right in front of you and I didn’t have to make it up, there was no green screen. And that was much more freeing than I was prepared for.”

Unfortunately, some fans misunderstood her statement and thought that she was looking down on the Marvel film as a whole. They criticized her statement and her acting in Ant-Man 3, with some pointing out how Majors carried the entire film. Here are their reactions on X,

As the fans have pointed out, the performance of the cast was at least serviceable to the otherwise bland film. However, they have clearly misunderstood Newton’s statement and are unfairly criticizing her. The actress was trying to make a point about which film she found challenging but was not bashing her Marvel film at all.

Kathryn Newton stars as Sammy in the new horror thriller Abigail from directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Newton’s character is a member of a group of criminals who kidnap a young girl for a rich paycheck. To their horror, they find out that the girl is a vampire, who starts hunting and killing them.

Newton talked to Forbes about playing her character, and how the directors gave her a lot of freedom to explore. The actress came up with the idea for tattoos, crazy outfits, and certain behavioral quirks for her character that were welcomed by her directors. She is incredibly grateful to them for taking in her ideas and making her job much easier. Newton said,

“She was just a character that seemed like it was going to be fun if I had the support from a cast and directors who gave me a lot of freedom. I read the whole script and thought, ‘What a great role’. However, there was work to do. I came in with a lot of ideas, and in a cool way, Matt and Tyler never told me no. That’s how the tattoos, the crazy outfit, and the dance were born.”

In addition to Newton, Abigail also stars Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Will Catlett, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud, and Giancarlo Esposito. The film was released on April 19, 2024, and has received generally positive reviews from critics and audiences. It currently has an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
