Later, they went to make the sequel of their first Spider: Man animated film—Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). Following the success of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, their focus is now on the franchise’s next installment—Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. It will follow Miles Morales as he tries to prevent Spot from destroying the multiverse.

With Lord and Miller’s proven track record of success in the animated superhero genre, James Gunn now wants them to helm a DCU project. What’s more interesting is that fans have come up with some interesting ideas, too.

Since they oversee film, gaming, and animation, they could see the success of the Spider-Verse series as a chance to replicate it at their studio. Even Gunn listed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse as his favorite comic book movie ever, so he’s definitely aware of its success. The 57-year-old told GQ:

“This movie works from start to finish. It does not have a bad beat in it. I just don’t think that there’s been a better superhero movie than Into the Spider-Verse.”

When a fan asked him on threads, “Since you love into the spiderverse would you love to have lord and miller work for any day project?” To this, the Guardians of the Galaxy director (@jamesgunn) replied, “Yes, I saw them yesterday I should have asked.”

Gunn said he saw the Phil Lord and Chris Miller, but regrets not asking them about working together. Looks like the St. Louis native is eager to work with the filmmakers. And more interestingly, fans have some wild ideas for the next DC project that Lord and Miller can think of next.

The DCU’s co-CEO could be interested in having Lord and Miller join a DCU project because they’re good at telling fresh stories and being creative. Their work with multiverse ideas in Spider-Verse could complement Gunn’s own work on similar themes.

James Gunn gave an update on Creature Commandos, an adult animated series in the new DC Universe. The show is about a lesser-known DC team, similar to how he approached the Guardians of the Galaxy at Marvel Studios. On Threads, the Super filmmaker talked about whether Creature Commandos is still being made.

Gunn said the initial animatics for Creature Commandos are finished. Now, the crew is focusing on creating the final animated versions. Based on his explanation, it seems like the DCU’s first project won’t be out for a few months.
