Ryan Gosling is one of the most sought-after actors working in Hollywood right now. The actor possesses the prowess of appearing in cinematic projects across genres. However, it was not always the case, Gosling had his fair share of struggles in the early days, even having a disastrous audition in his career.
Like many actors, Gosling hit and missed several roles. Of course, the actor has proved his capability with many remarkable roles, including The Notebook and his Oscar-nominated performances in La La Land and Barbie. But the actor also lost several roles in films like Fifty Shades Of Grey, but his audition for Gilmore Girls was reportedly terrible at best.
Ryan Gosling’s Audition For Gilmore Girls Was Really Bad
As Ryan Gosling attempted to climb the ladder of success in Hollywood, the actor gave a shot to appear in several projects, which includes Amy Sherman-Palladino-created popular comedy-drama, Gilmore Girls starring Alexis Bledel and Lauren Graham. Reportedly, the part Gosling was auditioning for was not huge, yet the showrunner had to say goodbye to him as the audition was horrible.
Sharing details of Gosling’s audition at a panel of a fan festival dedicated to the show in 2016, casting director Jami Rudofsky revealed her first encounter with Gosling as she was casting for another teen drama. Rudofsky thought Gosling would be fit to play “a football character” in Gilmore Girls. However, Gosling’s audition was “flat” and her co-workers thought (per Vulture) she must have been crazy to have faith in this kid, “Everyone was like, ‘Really, Jami?’”
In its essence, Gosling’s evolution as an actor from there has been quite fascinating. Now, he is one of the A-listers with astounding accolades and credits to his name. The actor recently appeared in David Leitch’s action thriller, The Fall Guy, with Emily Blunt.
Ryan Gosling Initially Impressed Jami Rudofsky Before His Gilmore Girls Audition
It required just a little effort from Gosling to seal the deal in the show. However, “[Gosling was] the one who got away,” Rudofsky said in the panel. In another interview with BuzzFeed News, she revealed that initially, the actor impressed her, and he was exactly what she was looking for in the Gilmore Girls character. “When I was a very wee casting person, I was casting [an] independent movie for no money,” Rudofsky told the outlet.
“This guy [Gosling] came in, and he was late, and I rolled my eyes because he was late, and he was blonde. I thought he was giving attitude — what I didn’t realize was that he was in character. He did the audition, and it was one of the most amazing auditions that I’ve ever seen.”
The casting director went on to add that she was eager to introduce Gosling to Gilmore Girls executives. “[I’d] kept him in my mind, and I was thinking, ‘I can’t wait for them [Gilmore Girls executives] to meet him,'” Rudofsky continued.
“And I am talking him up. I’m like, ‘Amy [Sherman-Palladino], guys, he’s the best actor. I’m telling you; he is amazing.’ So, he came in, I think it was a football character? I don’t even remember… He auditioned, and it kind of fell flat. And Amy was like, ‘Really, Jami?'”
At this point in his career, he has only been upward. Getting kicked out of the show does not matter that much as the actor walked the road to success in his post-Gilmore Girls phase.
All seven seasons of Gilmore Girls are available to stream on Netflix.
