This morning The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) and Thor: Ragnarak (2017) director, Taika Waititi, will be returning to direct Thor 4 for Marvel Studios.
Waititi was able to breathe new life into the Thor franchise with 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. Marvel Studios and even actor Chris Hemsworth seemed lost with the Thor character, not exactly knowing what more to do with him. Post – Avengers: Age of Ultron, Hemsworth was not even sure if he wanted to continue to play the character.
Love or hate Thor: Ragnarok or the story arc that subsequently followed in Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame, you have to admit Ragnarok was the launch of a very emotional journey for Hemsworth’s Thor. Waititi also brought a much lighter and comedic side to the God of Thunder, especially in his psychedelic, Kirby inspired world of Sakaar.
If we do indeed see a Thor 4 it won’t be for a couple of years. Marvel has a lot of other films in the pipeline and Taika Waititi is a very busy guy himself. In addition to directing an episode for Jon Favreau’s new Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, he has a smaller film, Jojo Rabbit, that will be hitting theaters October 18th and stars Black Widow herself, Scarlett Johansson.
Last month, Deadline revealed Waititi was tapped to direct a Flash Gordan Animated Film for Disney and his name has been attached to Warner Bros.’ long-in-development adaptation of the Japanese manga, Akira.
The Hollywood Reporter has also stated that the Akira adaptation, originally aiming for a May, 21, 2021 release will be put on hold due to Waititi’s attachment to the Thor franchise.
Marvel has yet to officially announce Thor 4 or any of their Phase 4 slate of films, though we do know a number of projects are in development. The Eternals, Shang Chi, and Black Widow have yet to be announced officially by Marvel Studios, but we know they are in various forms of development. Set photos of Black Widow have even leaked across the internet.
Marvel Studios also has sequels to Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel and now Thor in development. Marvel will have a big presence at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, and hopefully, if rumors are correct, release an official slate for their upcoming Phase 4.
Its too far out to know any specific plot details for the film, but Chris Hemsworth is expected to return as Thor. Based on the ending to Avengers: Endgame it wouldn’t be too far off to expect maybe an appearance by a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, or maybe Tessa Thompson’s Valkarye
