Roughly halfway through the main story, Unidentified Targets will be unlocked on the map. These will send you chasing Talon Drones, aka metal birdies, across the city. There are a total of eight Unidentified Targets in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, each entailing a wild chase where you’ll get to take your brand-new Web Wings for a spin.
The aim of this activity is to uncover the mystery behind which targets Kraven the Hunter is tracking with his drones and why. But these high-speed bird chases will also earn you plenty of XP and Rare Tech Parts as rewards. Once you’ve completed all Unidentified Targets in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, you’ll be the proud owner of the Data Collector trophy.
What Are Unidentified Targets in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2?
Once you’ve completed the Stay Positive Main Mission as Peter, you’ll get sent on the Wings of My Own Main Mission as Miles. The first Unidentified Targets in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be part of the main story, while the rest can then be tackled at any point, playing as either Miles or Peter.
To complete these activities, you have to head to several locations across New York and find Kraven’s tracker drones shaped like birds. Each of these Talon Drones is tracking a specific person, and it is up to the Spider-Men to figure out who he’s tracking. Soon enough, a mystery unfolds and will send you on a figurative and literal goose chase.
Each of the Unidentified Targets in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will begin on top of a building. Look for golden rings on rooftops, or hit R3 to reveal the beam of light with the holographic bird to find the locations of each. Our guide will show you where to find all the Unidentified Targets, so you won’t have any trouble locating them.
On each rooftop, you’ll need to find the veiled transmitter to get started. Thankfully, these are easy to spot as the light beam points directly to them. While they initially look like any normal rooftop object, the holographic disguise will dissolve as you approach it. Press Triangle to interact with the console and get the mission on the road – or in the air, rather.
How to Complete Unidentified Targets in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Once you’ve interacted with the console, the metal bird circling above will try to fly away. It is your objective to follow it using your Web Wings to glide. Stay in the drone’s slipstream to keep up.
You have to stay in the bird’s slipstream for a certain period of time as the drone’s data gets transmitted to your suit. Chasing those metal birdies with your Web Wings isn’t exactly smooth sailing, as they cut tight turns, weave through narrow openings, and tunnels, and even crash through buildings. Pay attention to follow its movements closely.
While flying, avoid the bombs they drop along the way by using the left thumb stick and pressing Circle to dodge. On some missions, a second bird will join the chase and bombard you with missiles, so always be on the lookout. Once the data transfer is complete, press Triangle to catch up to the drone and destroy it.
Tip: Are you having trouble chasing the metal birds? Fret not. To make this mission easier, you can turn on “Chase Assist” within the accessibility settings at any point during the game. This will reduce the drone’s speed and make it easier for you to stay in its slipstream. And you won’t have to worry about pressing Triangle, as Spider-Man will catch it automatically once the bird is in range.
Harlem: Wings of My Own Mission
Unidentified Targets get unlocked by completing the Wings of My Own Main Story Mission. Playing as Miles, you’ll get sent straight to the location of the first Unidentified Target in Harlem.
After scaling the building and interacting with the hidden console, you’ll hear a voice recording from Kraven. After that, the chase begins as you follow the first of Kraven’s Talon Drones. Once you’ve caught it, seven more Unidentified Targets locations will get unlocked on the map.
Upper West Side Unidentified Targets Location
Make your way to the center of the Upper West Side to find the golden rings, the beam of light, and metal birds circling above a rooftop.
Upper East Side Unidentified Targets Location
The next metal bird chase awaits in the southern end of the Upper East Side. Above one of the skyscrapers, you will see the birds drawing their circles. Head to the top and interact with the console at the bottom of the light beam to start the next chase.
Midtown Unidentified Targets Location
In the southwest corner of Midtown, head to the large glass building with one rounded side. On the very top, you will see the familiar metal birds and the light beam pointing you to the transmitter.
Chinatown Unidentified Targets Location
In the center of the northern half of Chinatown, you’ll find the next Unidentified Target. Look for the beam of light to find the building. This time, the transmitter you need to interact with is not on the very top of the roof. Instead, you’ll find it a few steps further down, on the building’s northeastern corner.
Financial District Unidentified Targets Location
One of the Unidentified Targets in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is located in the southern part of the Financial District. You’ll see the beam of light on top of one of the buildings. Note that it’s on a smaller building, right next to a taller one.
Williamsburg Unidentified Targets Location
Williamsburg’s Unidentified Target location will send you to the bridge connecting Williamsburg and Chinatown. You’ll find the birds above the Western tower of the bridge. For this location, you won’t have to look for a hidden console and can jump straight into the chase.
Downtown Queens Unidentified Targets Location
You’ll find the Unidentified Targets location in Downtown Queens in the north of the district, right next to the bridge connecting Downtown Queens and the Upper East Side. The birds are circling above one of the tallest skyscrapers there.
Midtown: Target Identified
After completing all eight Unidentified Targets in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, a ninth target will automatically spawn. The mission will lead you straight to a location in the northeastern corner of Midtown. Find the laptop hidden within a hologram on the northeastern corner of the building.
You will then have to quickly get to another location that will be marked on the map. Defeat the Hunters and enter the building through a hatch on the roof.
A voice will be speaking to you as you explore the apartment. Scan the kitchen counter with R2, make your way to the piano, and then interact with the chessboard on the coffee table.
You’ll have to move the Queen on the board to open a hidden door that will lead you into the apartment’s secret basement. Interact with what you find down there to reveal another secret section within the secret basement.
Search the room for items to interact with to be led into yet another secret room. You’ll be able to investigate several objects before the room starts filling with toxic gas. Use R1 + R2 and Square to open the door and run back out to safety.
After completing all Unidentified Targets in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, you will have finished the mission and gained a lot of XP and valuable Rare Tech Parts to upgrade your gear. This will also get you the Data Collector trophy and take you one step closer to that Platinum.
