Hollywood master-brains Zack Snyder knows just what he wishes to induce in his projects, and if things don’t work that way, he decides to create his own extended ‘Director’s cut’ version for the same. For his most recent film series Rebel Moon, Snyder did the same, though this time, it seems that all he wanted to add was a cajole of violence and R-rated drama in its rawest manner.
In fact, this ‘Director’s cut’ of the Netflix movie from 2023 included so much adult drama that even the filmmaker himself admitted that it almost felt like “alternative universe cuts” instead of being mere R-rated cuts of the same movie. That said, besides Snyder, now even fans believe that the mastermind may have crossed the line with the adult drama in the saga.
Zack Snyder Gets Candid About the R-Rated Cut of Rebel Moon
Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire, released on Netflix in 2023, may have had a budget making it the most expensive production of 2023 on Netflix, but it still failed to leave the mark and score the title of being one of the best-rated movies of the year. That said, filmmaker Snyder felt it was due to the lack of excitement, all of which they captured in the R-rated cut of the film.
According to what he shared in a recent interview with UNILAD:
“We planned it while we were shooting, you know, we actually photographed the actors saying different dialogue. We knew that we were almost doing a foreign language version. You know, you actually knew as we were filming, like, okay, that’s for the R-rated.”
But this R-rated version was a lot different than what many might expect it to be. In fact, this version quite literally changed the tone of the movie tremendously since it was “purposely over the top [in terms of] the s-x and violence.” And for Zack Snyder, it feels like these cuts more or less “color[ed]” the movie, making it “more self-aware” because “the violence is so insane.”
Continuing, the Man of Steel director himself admitted that this Director’s cut would make fans believe that scenes this gory and R-rated “shouldn’t exist in the sci-fi movie at this scale.”
“The way I like to talk about it is that I think the two cuts that are coming are almost like alternative universe cuts more than an extended version. Like, we call it the Director’s Cut. But they’re just like another movie.”
That being said, this R-rated director’s cut version of Part One: A Child of Fire will be released soon after the PG13 version. However, instead of making fans happier and excited for a more violent, gruesome, and action-packed director’s cut heading their way, this news has fans even more unimpressed, feeling like Snyder may have unnecessarily crossed the line with this one.
Fans React to Zack Snyder’s Version of an R-Rated Rebel Moon
While the prospect of seeing more gory and action has truly made Snyder’s die-hard fans even more excited for Part One: A Child of Fire than they already were, another section of entertainment buffs from the filmmaker’s fanbase is not so convinced. If anything, they are divided over the fact that including more R-rated stuff won’t make the plotline of the film any better.
Here’s this other section of Snyder’s fans’ unimpressed reaction on X:
This seems like a really expensive and inefficient way to make movies

This means zero storyline, zero character development. A Zack Snyder classic

Bro keeps making such bad films he has to hype everyone up with a R-rated version of it 😂

It just seems like a very odd use of resources to essentially make two of the same movie at the same time. Hes purposely going into it making one an inferior version? It doesn't make sense.

Zack Snyder convincing us that the studios were the ones ruining his movies, not him, might be the greatest gaslighting of all time.

Snyder cut strikes again 😭

Unnecessary to make a different version. Just write a good script w/o the padding of depraved violence, sex, and cussing. It rarely serves the characters. We were socially engineered to expect these things in a movie. They’re not necessary to tell a good story.

Why not just make 1 good cut of a movie?

Well, judging from all of these reviews, it seems like the one thing Zack Snyder needs to bring fans’ interest back in his Rebel Moon film series is not to include R-rated stuff in it, but rather, introduce a better storyline that is more captivating and worthy of luring fans inside the sci-fi lore. That said, the R-rated extended cut of the first film is set for a release window of mid-2024.
