Initially beginning life as a spin-off title to Assasin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Skull and Bones eventually evolved into an standalone project. Ubisoft’s long-awaited pirate game is about to get an official release this month. After getting delayed six times, players finally got to play the open beta, beginning on 8 February 2024.
The set-up for the in-game world has changed multiple times throughout the years. First in the Caribbean, then the mythical land of Hyperborea, and now it has come to East Africa and Southeast Asia. But one question remains among the players as its release date nears. Will Skull and Bones be multiplayer?
What’s going on with Skull And Bones multiplayer?
Players have been sailing throughout the lands of Skull and Bones in the open beta, but the game had turbulent sails throughout its development. Being stuck in development hell for over ten years, it is nothing short of a miracle that it is actually here. Some even called the game a curse as it has become something of a nightmare for Ubisoft. Hopefully, it won’t become a ‘nightmare came true’ scenario upon the official launch.
Apart from its single-player adventure, the game will feature multiplayer and cross-progression. The latter will allow players to play with their friends despite they are accessing it from another platform. Moreover, a user’s progress will be shared on the other platform, however, only via a Ubisoft account.
Players can either play via their servers or invite friends to play along despite the platform they are on. They can be invited through the “Social” tab if they are already on a user’s friend list. Then there’s a world tab that contains the list of all the recent players a user has played with. As the game currently does not have a search feature, one cannot search for a username so a Ubisoft account is mandatory for adding users.
How is the Open Beta looking?
Despite the turbulent development, the game does not have negative reviews. Instead official reactions have been more middling so far. According to a review given by the video game website Kotaku, this long-running saga “ends well.” Interestingly, the game was compared to Ubisoft’s The Division franchise for the similarity in its gameplay.
Skull and Bones may still carry some aspects that could need reparation given one leak in December 2023 highlighting potential bugs and glitches, which may wash up at the shore when the game arrives. On the contrary, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot was seen defending the game, calling it not AAA, but a “AAAA game.”
In an exclusive interview with FandomWire, Fast and Furious, and Dungeons and Dragons fame Michelle Rodriguez shared her experience with the game as she was given a chance to play the game’s early access version. She appears to have enjoyed the gameplay as she explains it as “a good one.” Provided this review is accurate, the game should strike as appealing to the users.
