Jujutsu Kaisen is inevitably one of the most intriguing fictional universes ever created, with its cursed spirits and jujutsu sorcerers using cursed tools and cursed energy manipulation to exorcise those curses. Out of all of them, the strongest sorcerer was unarguably Gojo Satoru. However, despite being the strongest, he didn’t have a record for using the most Black Flashes.
In fact, that record is held by none other than his colleague Nanami Kento, with Gojo being unable to surpass his record. Because of the immense power Gojo possessed, fans just couldn’t understand the reason behind this. That was until the recently released chapter 256 of the manga itself revealed the real reason why: Because of Gojo’s biggest asset.
Warning: Jujutsu Kaisen Manga Chapter 256 Spoilers Ahead!
The Real Reason Why Gojo Couldn’t Have More Black Flashes Than Nanami
In the Jujutsu Kaisen lore, the record to date of using the maximum Black Flashes still rests with Nanami Kento, with a stunning 4 score. And while Gojo Satoru managed to score the same number during the Shinjuku showdown against Sukuna (more on this later), he wasn’t able to surpass it, despite being the strongest sorcerer of the time.
While this topic remained one of hot debate among fans for quite some time, chapter 256 of the manga, The Decisive Battle in the Uninhabited Demon-Infested Shinjuku, has finally revealed the real reason behind this mystery. This chapter started with a flashback featuring Gojo explaining to his students just how this incredible cursed technique is unleashed.
During this, Gojo explained that even though he possessed six eyes, he couldn’t use this technique whenever he wanted. Why? Because, according to him, “There’s no correct answer as to how to unleash a Black Flash,” and while trying to unleash this technique, it ultimately “comes down to luck” and focus, “even for me.”
Continuing, he further explained that Kento’s record is higher than his because of his greatest asset: His power. As he said, “I clean up quick, so there’s no time to land ’em consecutively.” This means that Gojo is simply overpowered during his fights and his combats end much quicker than anyone else’s, so he pretty much doesn’t get many chances to use the technique.
Allow us to explain this more simply: This particular technique, which boosts its user’s physical strike when the strike and cursed energy “land within 0.000001 seconds of each other”, requires its user to be in the “zone” to use it. Breaking it down – it means that the user needs to lock in against his rival to enter the zone and create a Black Flash.
However, since Gojo hardly ever meets opponents whom he has to lock against to win the battle and is able to defeat his rivals without amplifying his powers, he doesn’t need to go into the “zone” either. Thus, since he hardly goes into the zone, he has fewer events to use this technique too, and thus, he has a lesser score than Kento as well.
The Time Gojo Used The Black Flash in Jujutsu Kaisen
As mentioned previously, Gojo Satoru does get the chance to use the Black Flash much later in the manga than the events shared in this flashback. This happened during his fight against the Ryomen Sukuna in the Shinjuku showdown event. Since Sukuna was immensely powerful, Gojo chose to go into the zone by locking in against him and dealing a devastating blow to the King of Curses.
Then when his opponent summoned Mahoraga and Agito using the Ten Shadows Technique, Gojo followed by dealing another three fierce blows to them. Thus, at the time of the Shinjuku showdown event, his score also rested at 4, i.e. the same as Kento’s. That being said, it is yet to be broken by someone else, with that someone else hinted to be Yuji Itadori in this chapter.
