Helldivers 2 is sending shockwaves throughout the industry. The co-op shooter is PlayStation and Arrowhead’s first proper live-service effort, and has racked up success that neither of them could see coming, clogging up servers for nearly 3 weeks after launch.
The heady stream of popularity surrounding the PS5 and PC game has made it very desirable for Xbox fans, who have been lobbying for Arrowhead to release it on Xbox via a Change.org petition. Xbox fans feel it’s a fair trade since the brand is porting some first-party games to PlayStation, but fans of the latter don’t agree.
Halo Veterans Want To Join The Fight For Freedom
Titled ‘Bring Helldivers 2 to Xbox – Fans Await Thrilling Co-op Action‘, the petition has blown through its initial goals and is steadily reaching 100,000 signatures, with 150,000 being the next target.
The primary supporters are Xbox fans, of course, with the Halo veterans claiming to “do their part” and take steps towards ending the console war by “helping their PlayStation brothers” spread democracy throughout the galaxy.
Interestingly, some Helldivers 2 players on PS5 and PC have voiced support for the cause as well. According to them, they need all hands on deck to eliminate the galaxy of its invaders, and who better to serve them a hot cup of Liber-tea than Xbox players who have exterminated Covenants in the past?
PlayStation Fans Want Helldivers 2 To Remain Exclusive
However, some PlayStation fans would rather have Helldivers 2 all to themselves. In a Reddit thread in the r/Helldivers community, a user posted the link to the petition, encouraging others to sign it and get the game ported to Xbox.
This was met with mixed reactions, as most commenters weren’t keen on signing for different reasons. One of the more popular comments expressed support for the cause, but injected a dose of realism, saying “Sony doesn’t care about any online petitions.”
Another comment rejected the proposal entirely, stating, “[We’re] already [at] full capacity, I don’t really want another community to join in, and make the server situation even worse.” The Redditor then added on to his stance, highlighting that there’s no Xbox petition to put Halo, Starfield, or Indiana Jones on PlayStation, concluding with a hard-hitting line: “Sharing games looks like a one way road to you.”
Most of the other comments echoed the latter sentiment, telling the original poster to simply switch to PS5 or PC if they want to play the game, instead of pooling their hopes into a petition. Sony has historically never been influenced by petitions, which diminishes hope for Xbox fans hoping to play Helldivers 2 on their consoles.
It’s no secret that Helldivers 2 is dominating chatter across the games industry. The smash hit co-op shooter comfortably sits on a lofty spot in Steam’s most played charts, and Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt recently hinted that the game has surpassed 3 million copies sold across PS5 and PC.
With success this massive, it’s only normal that Xbox fans want to join in on the action as well. If Helldivers 2‘s popularity blows up even more with future content updates, the game’s PlayStation console exclusivity could be less relevant than its reach, and Sony could finally fulfill Xbox users’ wish of playing the game.
A subset of PlayStation fans may be upset, but what matters more is liberty and democracy across the galaxy.
