The Marvel Comics have a lot more than just a ton of superheroes, and each one of them is incredibly powerful with their own magnificent superpowers. While they all have their respective powers ranging from magic to super strength and a lot of others, some of them are also gifted with immortality. Like Hulk, for one. Or Wolverine. Or Thor.
But while these 3 are often regarded as some of the strongest deathless superheroes — with Point Break even considered to be the most powerful immortal after all the times he came out victorious despite facing the most brutal of villains — there is one other mutant who surpasses all of these characters’ undyingness: Mr. Immortal, aka Craig Hollis.
Craig Hollis’ Immortality Surpasses Every Other Character in the MCU
Created by John Byrne and renowned as Mister Immortal, Craig Hollis is one of the most powerful characters in the entire Marvel Comics universe. He appeared in the limited four-issue comic book series G.L.A., i.e. the Great Lakes Avengers Misassembled, and as his name suggests, holds the incredible power of living eternally.
However, his powers are a lot stronger than that of others from the MCU. In fact, if he were to be compared with Hulk, Wolverine, or even the real son of Odin, Thor Odinson, in terms of deathlessness, he would still come victorious. This is because his powers aren’t restricted or limited, but instead, there is no extent to his immortality.
In the fourth issue of the comic book series (SPOILERS AHEAD FOR WHOEVER HASN’T READ G.L.A.), Deathurge explains to him his powers while he is out to take the soul of Monkey Joe and is in the form of a squirrel himself. According to what he tells him, Hollis’ immortality differs on a tremendous range from the other superheroes in the MCU.
As @Comic-Insights on YouTube explained, apparently,
“He’s the only person in the entire multiverse with true immortality. Every single being and cosmic entity will eventually die, except him. No matter how powerful everyone else is, he will be the only one who will survive.”
But even that’s not all. As incredible as his powers may seem to others, they are equally tragic for Craig Hollis, and for one too many reasons at that. As @Cosmic-Insights explained in plain words:
“In the end, when the last star in the multiverse burns out, he’ll be the one to see it, and he’ll be the only one to learn that grand secret that reveals itself at the end of time.”
Thus, even though Craig Hollis would inevitably be the one reaching the cosmic finale to unfold “the secret that reveals itself at the end of time,” what’s tragic is that he would also have to go through all his loved ones’ deaths before that and will have to live with the fact that he couldn’t save them despite being such an eternal being.
Another Drawback Associated With Mr. Immortal’s Superpowers
While having that much superpower indeed sounds like something everyone could quite easily desire in the deepest parts of their hearts, what’s worth noting is the fact that Craig Hollis’ mutant powers are also the worst of all that there are. And there is another reason behind this beside the unfortunate fact we listed above.
According to the comics, even though Craig Hollis is bestowed with such remarkable power, he is also bestowed with a major drawback. And that drawback is the fact that he still feels every single pain that ever gets inflicted upon him. Be it emotional or physical, he feels it as strongly as every other normal human being.
Because of this very disadvantage coupled with how he has to watch his loved ones wither away while he continues to live, Hollis even became depressed at one point of time. And not just the normal type of depressed — he was depressed to the point where he tried to take his life one too many times.
Yet, since he was truly immortal, he could heal any and every wound, and ended up surviving every single time. Nonetheless, after discovering his true power and deathlessness, Craig Hollis decided to dedicate his entire life and remaining time (which is, perhaps, eternal in the comics) to helping and saving humanity, even though everything would perish in the end but him in the MCU.
