Bloodborne‘s release on PS4 in 2015 was a venerable moment in history. FromSoftware taking a break from Dark Souls to create the beautiful gothic world of Yharnam absolutely enchanted players. Short wonder then that it accrued universal acclaim, scored a 92 on Metacritic, and sold several million copies to date.
However, as pretty as the game looked, it still had its limitations. If you could look past the 30fps cap, the jittery frame pacing was sure to irritate. Ever since the PS5 released, fans have been clamoring for a Bloodborne remaster that fixes the PS4 version’s issues. However, based on FromSoftware chief Hidetaka Miyazaki’s recent comments, we might be left wanting.
Remaster Desperation Grows Every Passing Day
For the past 4 years, Bloodborne fans have looked to every State of Play and PlayStation Showcase event, hoping to see the gothic masterpiece mentioned. And for 4 years, we’ve seen PS5 versions of Uncharted 4, The Last of Us, Death Stranding, Demon’s Souls, Until Dawn, and more announced, while Bloodborne‘s still stuck in the past.
Even games that launched in the same year as PS5, like The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima, got PS5 remasters, but a game like Bloodborne that would actually benefit from a remaster on a technical level, is left hanging.
The situation is so dire, that there’s actually a running joke in the Reddit community r/GamingLeaksAndRumours about perpetual rumors surrounding Bloodborne, with none of them coming to fruition.
FromSoftware Loves Bloodborne, But That’s It
In an interview with Eurogamer, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the president of FromSoftware, recently acknowledged the fervent desire for a remaster/remake: “It is a title we hold very dear and just as much as our fans…It does make me very happy to see that there are still so many people passionate about it.“
When questioned about a Bloodborne remake, Miyazaki said, “I think having new hardware is definitely a part of what gives these remakes value. Things you weren’t able to achieve on previous generations of hardware, ways you weren’t able to render specific expressions – [new hardware] sometimes makes it possible.“
Although Miyazaki expressed gratitude and passion over the game, he also made it clear that his hands are tied, as Sony owns the Bloodborne IP. Therefore, Miyazaki was unable to offer any concrete information or promises about its future.
Allegedly Scrapped Port Enrages Fans Further
Even though fans jest about Sony ignoring Bloodborne, industry insider Lance McDonald alleged not long ago that a Bloodborne port for PC and PS5 was in the works, but got scrapped by PlayStation close to release. Lance’s reliable track record regarding FromSoftware games lent credence to the report, and amplified the community’s already-high frustration.
Adding insult to injury, former journalist Imran Khan corroborated McDonald’s claims about the scrapped port, while simultaneously cautioning fans against holding their breath for a revival anytime soon. This aligns with the numerous rumors and speculations surrounding a Bloodborne remaster over the years, all of which ultimately failed to materialize.
As the game approaches its 10th anniversary in 2025, a sliver of hope persists among fans; believing a remaster announcement might still be on the way. Bloodborne is reportedly getting a live-action adaptation as well, thanks to recent rumors from insider DanielRPK. Since Sony times remasters to launch close to the franchise’s theatrical/TV debut, hope may not be lost.
With the recent surge in remakes across the games industry, coupled with the immense success of Elden Ring, Bloodborne is a prime candidate for a future revival. Additionally, leaked sales data from the Insomniac breach revealed that the game sold over 7.46 million copies since launch, further solidifying its commercial viability and strengthening the case for an updated version.
Bloodborne‘s achingly pretty gothic aesthetic, immersive world design, and fiercely passionate fanbase are all compelling arguments in favor of a remaster. A recent fan-created mod that enables the game to run at 60fps on modded PS5s serves as a testament to the community’s desire for improved visuals and performance.
From a purely financial and critical standpoint, a Bloodborne remaster seems like a no-brainer, especially when compared to other recent remakes that have garnered mixed reactions. However, Sony’s recent decision to shut down a Bloodborne Kart fan project casts a shadow of doubt on their true intentions with the IP.
In addition to mastering the game, the Bloodborne community has to also master the art of patience, because it seems they may need a lot of it in the future.
