Kakashi Hatake is unarguably one of the most beloved characters from the Naruto saga, even though he is also the very character about whom very little personal details are spared. While everyone knows about his star-studded abilities and all the Jutsu he can perform, not many are aware of his family (except for who his father is).
This is because very few details about Hatake’s family have been revealed in the saga, with the only known person from his family being his deceased father. But who is his mother? This is a question long asked by fans, and one fan theory just may have answered this question along with revealing where he actually is from, which is surprisingly not Konohagure!
Naruto Theory Seemingly Explains Kakashi’s Real Birthplace
Every fan of the Naruto universe knows that Kakashi Hatake is the son of Sakumo Hatake, who was the celebrated “White Fang of the Leaf” of the ninja world, having been one of the most powerful shinobis from Konohagure to have ever existed.
But apart from his deceased father, who else is the member of the younger Hatake’s family? Or, to be more precise, who is his mother? Well, while this remains officially unknown, one fan theory seems to have finally answered this question.
This theory came to light during a discussion on Reddit on why the teacher of Team 7 keeps his face constantly hidden, covered with his mask. As one Reddit user /u/Ruudkin theorized, it could have been because he “has those sharp teeth” like the people from Kirigakure.
Allow us to elaborate: Some of the people from Kirigakure (also known as the Land of the Mist) are shown to have acquired the trait of having razor-sharp teeth in the storyline, just like the Redditor suspects the young Hatake of having.

Thus, connecting all of these dots, it is only likely that Kakashi Hatake’s mother could have been from Kirigakure, which could be the place where his non-Hatake half lineage lies. And we have one more fact from the saga to prove this.
Another Trait of the Kirigakure Ninjas That Backs This Theory
The fact that some of the people from the Land of the Mist have razor-sharp teeth just like Sakumo Hatake’s son is suspected of having already points out that Kakashi may as well have been from the Kirigakure clan. However, there is one other fact that proves this.
Ninjas from the Land of the Mist also hide their faces like Sasuke Uchiha’s teacher. Like Zabuza Momochi, Haku, Kisame Hoshigaki, and even Raiga Kurosuki — all of whom hide their faces either with a mask or with a giant neckband.
Moreover, the fact that these characters are also from the 7 Swordsmen and can wield their respective weapons excellently (just like Kakashi) seemingly proves that the younger Hatake might have been a part of the clan as well. But this theory has flaws of its own.
Thus, for now, we’ll just let the focus rest on the part about how Sakumo’s son’s non-Hatake lineage from his unknown mother’s side may as well be related to the Kirigakure clan. That is exactly what the Redditor’s unsure theory inevitably points towards.
