Marvel Studios have taken the internet by storm with their panel at San Diego Comic-Con this evening. They announced who they cast as the Mandarin, that Natalie Portman is returning as Lady Thor, and that Vision is coming back. However, it was the Fantastic Four and Blade announcements that truly surprised fans.
To date, there have been three Fantastic Four movies which were hated by audiences and critics alike. There was also a Blade trilogy which garnered mostly positive responses.
Blade is a fairly violent character and his movies embraced it. Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, previously stated that Deadpool could open the door to an R-rated corner of the MCU, but Kevin Feige did not say what Blade‘s rating would be tonight. It is possible that this could be the MCU’s first R-rated movie.
There’s absolutely no information on the Fantastic Four movie and the only info that was given on Blade was that the lead has been cast. Mahershala Ali is going to play the titular character. He has already made an appearance in the MCU in the Netflix show Luke Cage where he played the villain ‘Cottonmouth’.
This means that he is the second character from Luke Cage to have played two roles within the MCU. The other was Alfre Woodard who portrayed Mariah Dillard and a smaller character in Captain America: Civil War.
It is growing more and more uncertain as to how canon the Netflix shows are. Either way, he is a fantastic choice for the role as he looks the part and has incredible talent.
These two movies will likely be released in 2022 or later as the next two years are already clearly laid out. Hopefully, Marvel Studios will unveil more information soon in regards to who has been cast, who is directing, who is writing and when we will see these films.
Fantastic Four will be the first MCU movie made possible by the Disney-Fox deal. Hopefully, we’ll see The Uncanny X-Men make their debut in the near future as well.
