Zemo’s first and only appearance was in Captain America: Civil War as the puppet master pulling the strings. It was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con that, while he was arrested the last time we saw him, he will be returning in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Disney + Show in Fall 2020.

The most exciting part of Baron Zemo’s re-appearance is that he will don the iconic purple mask. This was revealed by Daniel Brühl on his Instagram.

They are clearly going for a more tactical look as opposed to his fabric balaclava of the comics. He has also grown a beard for the role. Perhaps this is a ‘blip beard’ as Happy puts it. Brühl also stated in a post that “Zemo will be back for no good!!!” but his goals are currently unknown. He’s split the Avengers up once so now what is he up to?

Zemo is an ex-special forces soldier from Sokovia. After the chaos that ensued in Avengers: Age of Ultron, he made it his mission to tear the Avengers apart and he is one of the few villains that succeeded in their goal. However, he found himself imprisoned by the end of the film by Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther.

How he will return is currently unknown as there’s not too much information on the show just yet. There are rumors that U.S. Agent will make an appearance and that Sam and Bucky will have to take down a rogue Captain America replacement. This is all unconfirmed as nothing concrete has been announced by Marvel Studios themselves.

Daniel Brühl is not the only character set to return. It was also reported that Emily VanCamp, who plays Sharon Carter, will be making an appearance. With both actors reprising their roles, they could very well reveal her to have been a sleeper agent under Zemo’s control all along. This would make Captain America: Civil War a somewhat different experience upon re-watches but it is a plausible theory inspired by the comics that fans have been sharing for a while now.

The show is not only sporting an impressive cast as Marvel Studios have recruited some impressive talent for behind the camera. Derek Kolstad and Kari Skoglan have been hired as writer and director. The former is a co-writer for the John Wick franchise and the latter is mostly known for directing The Handmaid’s Tale. However, she is no stranger to Marvel as she has directed an episode of The Punisher back in 2017.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will be launching in Fall 2020. It is six episodes long and has Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan returning as Sam and Bucky. It is one of the five upcoming exclusive Disney+ shows.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Mackie walked onto the stage with Captain America’s iconic shield. The show will definitely be dealing with the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame in which an older Steve Rogers passed the mantle onto Sam Wilson.
